Sidney Anderson

The Sidney Anderson recorded on the war memorial is almost certainly Robert Sidney Anderson, a private in the Lincolnshire Yeomanry.  He was born in 1897 in Downham Market, Norfolk. In the early 20th century his family moved to Heydour (near Sleaford) where his father, Robert Anderson, was employed as a shepherd. His parents seemed to move house regularly as by 1917 they were in Weston St Mary, near Spalding; though Sidney (who enlisted at Lincoln) was described as being a resident of Leadenham

Sidney Anderson was killed in action in Palestine on 28 Nov 1917 (age 21). The Lincolnshire Yeomanry were part of North Midland Mounted Brigade (British Indian Army) which at the time was involved in the capture of Jerusalem from the Ottoman Turks. He was buried in the War Cemetery at Ramleh (now on the outskirts of Tel Aviv) which was home to a Field Ambulance station at the time.

Sidney Anderson is listed on the Hough War Memorial, the Fulbeck War Memorial and (as Robert Sidney) on the Caythorpe War Memorial.
