Shelbourn

For many years the Shelbourn family lived at Church Farm, Hough on the Hill.

Jesse Tatem Shelbourn was born in Hough about 1889, son of John Shelbourn and Eliza Minta Shelbourn of Church Farm.  John Shelbourn was a builder and monumental mason (he made many of the local gravestones).  By 1901 they’d moved to 93 Balderton Gate, Newark.

In 1915 Jesse was living at 91a Balderton Gate (perhaps his father had built a house on part of his land) and employed as a labourer.  He enlisted in Newark in 1915 ‘for the duration’ and joined the Royal Engineers (45222 then 167674, Sapper in 92nd Field Company).  In 1916 he married Ethel W Oliver from Helpringham.  He was killed in action in France on 6 Aug 1918 (age 29).  He is buried in Beacon Cemetery, south west of Albert.
